What is Keyless Recovery?

Keyless recovery is the ability to move or reclaim digital assets without needing their private keys or seed phrases. Instead of restoring the key, it uses recovery paths that are authorized in advance, so assets can be moved to safety even when keys are lost, stolen, or unavailable.

In plain terms, keyless recovery is recovery that does not depend on your private keys. It is what Circuit Security's Automatic Asset Extraction technology delivers, and it is the foundation of Circuit's two keyless products, Recovery and Response. Circuit's third product, Key Backup, is a separate, trustless encrypted backstop that does store the key material itself, so it is not keyless recovery. For institutions, keyless recovery removes the biggest weak point in traditional recovery: the key itself.

How keyless recovery works

Traditional recovery assumes you still have, or can rebuild, the private key. That assumption breaks in exactly the moments recovery is needed: the key is lost, a signer is gone, or an attacker already controls the wallet. Keyless recovery does not make that assumption.

At Circuit Security, keyless recovery is delivered by Automatic Asset Extraction, the technology behind Recovery and Response. It keeps a set of signed transactions ready and up to date, and on a defined trigger those transactions move assets to a vault approved beforehand. Because the transactions are authorized ahead of time, no key is needed at the moment of recovery.

Keyless recovery vs key backup

  • What it preserves: a key backup preserves the private key; keyless recovery preserves the assets.
  • Depends on key material at recovery time: key backup, yes; keyless recovery, no.
  • Fails if the key is compromised: key backup, yes; keyless recovery, no.
  • Single point of failure: for a key backup, the key itself; for keyless recovery, none by design.

Why it matters

A backed-up key is still a key: it can be stolen, mishandled, or lost along with the original. Keyless recovery shifts what you protect from the key to the asset. That is why it maps to the Respond and Recover functions of NIST CSF 2.0, where the goal is keeping the assets safe, not keeping the key.
